Working in groups, you will try to solve this treasure hunt.



INTRODUCTION


From the dawn of civilization (and probably much earlier), music played two major roles in human society: ceremony (social, religious, and/or civic) and entertainment. Let´s learn a little bit about the music in the Great Ancient Societies: Greece, Rome and Egypt. 



QUESTIONS


1. What do we know by the term "Ancient Music"?

2. What did they use the music for in Ancient Egypt?

3. In which places could we find music in Ancient Egypt?

4. What instruments were used in Ancient Egypt?

5. Have a look of the Ancient Egyptian instruments, then choose one of them, draw it in your paper and write it´s characteristics.

6. How did they understand the music in Ancient Greece?

7. Why did Greek people believe that music had "healing powers"?

8. What is an "Aulos"?

9. Draw an aulos in your paper.

10. What is the "Song of Seikilos" and What does it contain?

11. Which civilization influenced the music in Rome?

12. Did the Roman Empire like the music? What did they use it for?

13. Choose an instrument from Rome and draw it in your paper. Then, write it´s characteristcis.

MUSIC NOTATION

Greeks invented a notation system for music, and nowadays it has evolved. We use five lines and a wide range of musical notes.

  • STAVEa set of five parallel lines on any one or between any adjacent two of which a note is written to indicate its pitch.

  • TREBLE CLEFwe use Clefs to tell us which notes correspond to which lines or spaces. The most popular clef is the treble clef. And it indicates that the "SOL" note corresponds to the second line of the stave.

BASS CLEF: Thebass clef, or F clef, is used for the lower sounding notes.

BREATH MARK: A breath mark or luftpause is a symbol used in musical notation. It directs the performer of the music passage to take a breath.
